Mountain Warehouse has a wide and varied range of waterproof and water resistant jackets to suit all tastes and abilities of outdoor pursuits. When looking for waterproof jackets there are a number of requirements and stipulations that you should consider when deciding which jacket to purchase. When outdoors you want to remain warm and dry at all times; so whether you’re caught in a light April shower or surprised by unexpected torrential rain; it is wise to be prepared. When purchasing a waterproof jacket you should always consider the key activities that you need the jacket for and then spend appropriately. 

Many of our Mountainlife jackets are multipurpose and multifunctional however; there are times when you may find that you need something more specific; for example, if you’re cycling you may find you need a jacket with a low back to prevent mud and water hitting your back as the wheels go round. 

Level of waterproofing and hydrostatic head measurement  

Waterproof jackets vary in how protective they are.  The waterproof level of a jacket is measure by the hydrostatic head of the fabric; the hydrostatic head is the level at which water is able to permeate the fabric.  Key factors to consider are the type of fabric, breathability, water resistance, the wind proof ability as well as the hydrostatic head gauge the jacket has. The hydrostatic head of a garment is measured by pouring water into a tall cylinder over the top of the fabric; when you reach the level where water is able permeate through the fabric this measurement is then given as the hydrostatic head of the garment. The larger the number; the higher the waterproof factor; the number could be 2,000mmm, 4,000mm or even 10,000mm. The windproof quality of our jackets determines how much protection you will get from the wind chill; when wearing a jacket we would advise on a decent layering system underneath your jacket – this will protect you from the wind as well as help to keep you warm.  Lightweight and Packaway jackets Our Mountainlife pack away jackets are great value for protection for the rainy weather. Lightweight and consequently easy to carry and transport when on the move; the pack away jackets are great value and available for men, women and children. There is little breathability in the pack away jackets although they are perfect to have to hand when showers or down pours occur. If you require a waterproof jacket for more active outdoor sports where you may find that you’ll be outside for a long period of time then we would advise on a jacket that will allow perspiration to evaporate whilst keeping you warm from the wind as well.
