Summer Holiday Activities: Canyoning

19.07.2013 | Activities

Now that summer has arrived, the panic about how to keep the kids amused over the holidays truly begins. Avoiding the ‘I’m bored’ moans can be tricky, especially while they are so attached to their computer games and the sofa. If you can lure them outside, with some exciting activities, then everyone can benefit by making the most of the sunshine (while it lasts) and getting a bit of exercise at the same time.

That’s why we have put together some alternative adventures to get the kids outdoors and will feature one per week on our blog. First up, we have Canyoning.

Don’t forget to put the sunscreen on them!

What?

Canyoning is Gorge Walking’s bigger and scarier elder brother. It involves descending a canyon by jumping, sliding, climbing and abseiling and requires a great deal of nerve! You do have to walk to the top first in your wetsuit, so that first dip into the cold water comes as a welcome surprise. Plus, you’ll soon find that jumping off a 35 foot waterfall into a freezing plunge pool should dispel with the summer holiday boredom in an instant!

Where?

You can take on a canyon in Scotland, Wales or in the Lake District- all very scenic locations! There are some great value half day or full day trips with fully trained experts available at Vertical Limits, Adventure Britain and Adventures Wales. A sunny summer day is ideal for trying Canyoning as you’ll be able to stay cool in the water and take in the stunning landscapes as you go.

What to Wear?

The centres normally provide you with a wetsuit, buoyancy aid and helmet, so all you really need to bring is trainers (preferably with good grips) that you don’t mind getting very wet and muddy! But you should check with the activity operator before you go. Also a change of clothing, shoes and towel for when you are finished is a good idea.
