Keeping Luggage Safe & Secure
When it comes to the safety of your luggage unfortunately there are times when things are out of your control - such as on a flight. In general with some common sense and taking precautions you can limit the possibility of any of your belongings going missing.
- A strong padlock on the zips of your bags will act as a useful deterrent. You can also buy a cable lock which is useful to lock your bag when it is unattended, for example to a hostel bed.
- In some countries, the USA for example, the use of a regular padlock on a plane is not allowed - remember to remove it or your bag may get cut open!
- It is very useful to have a distinguishing feature on your bag to avoid mistaken identity on the airport carousel. You would be surprised how many people out there may have the same bag as you - especially if it's black!
- It's an obvious one but it is surprising how many of us leave bags unattended in public places like airports and hotels. It only takes a few seconds to steal a bag in crowded areas so be vigilant at all times.
- Hotel rooms are sometimes not as safe as we would like to think. You should place any valuables such as passport, money and jewelry in the room's safe or hotel's safe.
