For first time skiers or for shorter ski trips snow proof fabric is ideal and will prevent snow penetrating the fabric. For more frequent skiers it is advisable to look for a fully waterproof ski jacket with taped seams.
Staying dry is not just about water or snow seeping in though fabric, snow can be easily forced inside the ski jacket through the cuffs and bottom of the jacket though a fall. It is important to have a snow skirt on your ski jacket. A snow skirt can be sewn into the jacket, or detachable, and is essentially a strip of fabric which is elasticated around the bottom that provides a barrier between you and the snow – similar to a gaiter. Inner snow cuffs inside your ski jacket are also of vital importance for the same reason; it also provides extra warmth to the wrist and arms in particularly cold weather.
Some of the higher spec ski jackets will have taped seams. Taping a seam basically means the stitched area of the jacket has been sealed to make it waterproof.
