Campsite go ahead given for Royal Park for London Olympics

The Queen announced this week that she has given the royal go ahead for Windsor Great Park to be turned into a campsite for the London Olympic Games this summer. Accommodation will be up to 1000 visitors attending rowing, kayaking, and flat water canoeing events at Eton Dorney Lake. The site will offer one site catering, as well as food from the Royal farm.

An Olympic Park and Ride scheme has been set up to get campers to the lake, and arts and open air theatre events have already been arranged on The Lawns including a performance of The Important of Being Earnest, and The Savill Garden and Building will also stay open until late with special admission offers for campers. The campsite will be pitched along the famous Long Walk, the long avenue of trees running across the park The Camping and Caravanning Club who are running the Windsor Park campsite will also have sites in Lee Valley, walking distance from the Olympic Great Park.

Although it will be high summer during the Olympics, with the temperamental British weather it’s best to be prepared. A two season sleeping bag will cover you for camping the whole year around and will keep you comfortable from temperatures from 5-20C. Additionally don’t forget your sleeping mat, as dew will settle during on the grass during the night, and there is always a possibility that it may dampen your sleeping bag. Sleeping mats also provide additional comfort sleeping on the ground, however, if you are used to your creature comforts, an air mattress is easy to set up in your tent, and you can also bring your favourite bed linens and pillows from home.

Make your tent stand out, and easy to find by decorating the outside. Add a hanging lantern so you can spot it in the dark, and a head torch is a great tool for finding your way to the bathroom in the middle of the night.
