When warmth is at the forefront of your mind a
fleece jacket or mid layer fleeces what you need. Your fleece is integral when used as part of a three part layering system as it will add warmth without weight.
Fleece is a manmade synthetic fibre which is made from polyester. Fleece can look and feel very different depending kind of fleece you choose and will be suitable for different activities. Some fleeces can also be a blend of fibres for example polyester mixed with wool, cotton or nylon. The different weights and technical capabilities of the Mountain Warehouse fleece jackets and mid layers means that there is a style suitable you whatever your requirements. Fleece is also incredibly soft against the skin and can be an ideal substitute for those unable to wear wool.
Teamed with a
waterproof jacket and a
base layer, a fleece makes the perfect mid layer when being used as part of a three part layering system as the fabric will trap the air to help keep you warm.
What are the different kinds of fleece jackets and mid layers?
Micro fleece is thin, lightweight and made out of soft material. A micro fleece is most effective at transporting moisture away from the base layer to the outer layer whilst also providing a low level of insulation. They are great to be worn as one of a number of layers, whilst also offering the flexibility to be worn on its own in milder weather. As weight is the priority with this type of garment it is unlikely to find features such as pockets or hoods on a micro fleece. A micro fleece top is best suited for general wear and as a layer while walking and hiking in cooler weather.
A mid- weight fleece is the most versatile and common fleece type, these fleeces are great to wear all day and for many different activities. Mid-weight fleeces have a higher level of insulation, comfort and breathability than micro fleeces. They are ideal for wearing on their own on cool dry days while out walking, or as a warm layer under a waterproof and breathable jacket in the mountains. A fleece mid layer may include features such as pockets at each side and either a half or full zip.
Mid layer fleeces are ideal for wearing during outdoor pursuits, particularly in conditions where you require ease of movement, flexibility and do not need extra weight.
The warmest fleeces available tend to be thicker and extremely warm, often a double layer, they may also be wind proof and can be worn as a soft shell jacket providing the weather is dry, although are still thin enough to be worn under your waterproof jacket should you require the warmth. Generally designed with pockets on each side and a full zip, a fleece jacket is ideal in the winter.
A good fleece will be anti pill which stops the fabric bobbling up as it rubs against your other layers while moving. This will ensure that your fleece remains looking like new even after multiple wears and washes.
