07.03.2012 | News

The 2012 London Olympics are just around the corner, but for snowsport athletes, Sochi is the next big competition.

The 2014 Winter Olympics will be taking place in the Russian city of Sochi, with a brand new Olympic park being built beside the Black Sea named the Coastal Cluster. A second park, the Mountain Cluster, is also set to be built in the nearby area of Krasnaya Polyana.

Zoe Gillings will be riding her snowboard for Team GB in 2014, and finished eighth in the snowboard cross in the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics. Freeskier James Woods is another hopeful for 2014, and took bronze at the Euro X Winter Games, Britain’s first slopestyle skiing medal and Woods’ first ever X Games medal. Woods is competing again in this year’s Euro X Games on March 12th to defend his title, along with snowboarder Jenny Jones, who holds 3 consecutive Euro X Games Gold Medals.

Zoe Gillings and James Woods are also receiving financial assistance from UK Sport who have awarded over £300,000 of funding for Team GB’s preparations for the Sochi 2014 Olympics to British Ski and Snowboarding.
