Best known for being BBC\u2019s weather forecaster, Michael Fish has recently taken the role of Mountain Warehouse\u2019s meteorological consultant to dispel all of those head-scratching weather myths.\u00a0 Does lightning never strike in the same place twice? What does a red sky at night actually mean?<\/p>\n

Michael Fish sheds some light on weather lore and if there really is any truth behind these treasured tales:<\/p>\n

  1. \u2018Lightning never strikes the same place twice\u2019<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Michael\u2019s Verdict<\/span>: \u201cOh, yes it does, I\u2019ve seen it! Other clouds are also good indicators. Small \u2018fair weather\u2019 cumulus clouds for instance.\u201d<\/p>\n

    1. \u2018Cows lie down when it\u2019s about to rain\u2019<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Michael Verdict<\/span>: \u00a0\u201cCows lying down simply means they\u2019re tired! I have however noticed seagulls often fly inland ahead of stormy weather. Perhaps they can detect the rapidly falling pressure.\u201d<\/p>\n

      1. Over 56% of the British population believe \u2018Red sky at night, shepherd’s delight, red sky in the morning shepherd’s warning\u2019<\/strong> to be true.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        Michael\u2019s Verdict<\/span>: \u201cBased on the passage of weather fronts around a cyclone. The high cloud on the advancing warm front catches the rays of the rising sun and looks red due to the scattering of the sun\u2019s rays.\u201d<\/p>\n

        1. \u2018If the oak is out before the ash, then you will only get a splash. But if the ash beats the oak then you can expect a soak\u2019<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          Michael\u2019s Verdict<\/span>: \u201cTrees can be used to make a forecast in many ways. When trees show the underside of their leaves, giving a much lighter appearance than usual, it is a sure sign of rain. The phenomenon is caused by the humidity increasing and softening the stalks of the leaves, causing them to turn over.\u201d<\/p>\n

          1. \u2018Haloes around the sun or moon indicate rain or snow soon\u2019<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

            Michael\u2019s Verdict<\/span>: \u201cThis is similar as the haloes are often caused by refraction through the ice crystals of high weather frontal clouds.\u201d<\/p>\n

            On days when the weather is uncertain, Fish uses unusual apparatus to predict the weather. He tells us \u201ccoming from Eastbourne and still frequently visiting I have my own piece of seaweed. People used to swear by it. All I can say is that when it is dry and shrivelled the weather is fine and when it is wet it’s raining!\u201d<\/p>\n
