Washing down sleeping bags is important to ensure they\u00a0remain\u00a0clean and the down retains its loft and warmth. This guide will show you how to wash a down sleeping bag in your washing machine or by hand.<\/p>\n

If your down sleeping bag is past its best, take a look at the Mountain Warehouse down sleeping bag range.<\/a><\/p>\n

Machine Washing a Down Sleeping Bag\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n

You will need a specialist down cleaner to wash a down sleeping bag such as our Down Care Kit <\/a>which not only comes with the specialist down cleaning liquid, it also includes three dryer balls which helps the down in your sleeping bag not to clump together in the drying process. You also need a large (Over 10kg) Front Loading Washing Machine, if your machine is smaller or top loading, follow hand washing instructions.<\/p>\n

  1. Before putting your\u00a0down sleeping bag in the machine, run it\u00a0through a rinse cycle empty to remove any previous soap residues.\u00a0If at a launderette, check there is nothing inside the machine which could snag your bag.<\/li>\n
  2. Do up all the zips and velcro on the bag, if it has a waterproof shell turn it inside out.<\/li>\n
  3. Place your sleeping bag in the machine and add a technical cleaner such as our Down Care Kit detergent.<\/a> Regular detergent or softener can damage down sleeping bags.<\/li>\n
  4. Wash your down sleeping bag at\u00a030\u00b0 or on a delicate cycle.<\/li>\n
  5. Once the wash has finished, rinse thoroughly. Check your sleeping bag is completely rinsed by pressing down on it. If soap suds come out, the bag will need to go back in the washing machine on a rinse cycle.<\/li>\n
  6. Before removing the bag from the machine, make sure you place several towels on the floor to soak up any water.\u00a0The down feathers are delicate and the sleeping bag heavy when wet, so make sure you support the length of the bag when moving to the dryer to avoid any damage.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Hand Washing a\u00a0Down Sleeping Bag<\/strong><\/h2>\n

    If you want to hand wash your down sleeping bag, you will need to do this in a bath.<\/em><\/p>\n

      \n
    1. Rinse your bath before filling it up with lukewarm water.<\/li>\n
    2. Add your specialist down cleaner<\/a> to the bath and mix it around until it is evenly distributed.<\/li>\n
    3. Submerge your sleeping bag into the bath.<\/li>\n
    4. After leaving to soak for an hour or so, drain the water and refill again with fresh water.<\/li>\n
    5. Remove all the soap from the bag by gently massaging it, you can do this by walking up and down the bag. Do not wring or squeeze the bag.<\/li>\n
    6. Continue until all the soap has been removed, emptying and refilling the water as you go.<\/li>\n
    7. Once the sleeping bag is soap free, drain the water from the bath. The sleeping bag may still be water logged so push down on it to remove all the remaining water.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Can you put a sleeping bag in the dryer?<\/h2>\n

      For best results you should use a tumble dryer to dry your down sleeping. To prevent the down clumping together add the drying balls into the dryer, if you do not have specialist drying balls you can use a few clean tennis balls . It may take several hours for a down sleeping bag to dry completely so you’ll need to be patient. You can air dry your down sleeping bag but it is important to remember that this can take a long time.<\/p>\n
