How to Reproof a Waterproof Jacket

29.02.2024 | Expert Advice

This guide will show you how to reproof a waterproof jacket using either a waterproofing spray or a wash in waterproofer.

Waterproofing Spray

Spray On Proofer 275ML

The Mountain Warehouse waterproof spray is an easy way to improve the water repellency of your coat.

Wash in Proofer

Wash N Proof 300ml

If you need to clean your waterproof jacket as well as reproofing, Mountain Warehouse Wash n Proof is for you.

How to tell when your waterproofing is wearing off?

If you notice the fabric of your coat is absorbing rather than repelling water, it’s time to reproof it.

How to Use Our Waterproofing Products

Our proofers should not alter the look or handle of the fabric. However, it is recommended that the products are tested on a small, inconspicuous area before spraying on or washing into the garment.

Waterproof Spray

A waterproof spray will help reproof your jacket to maximise its waterproofing and breathability.

Always wash your coat first if re-proofing using a waterproof spray. Dirt and oil can clog up the breathable membrane found in many waterproof jackets, making it feel as though water is penetrating through the fabric. When washing your jacket, it is important to use a specialist performance cleaner designed for technical outerwear rather than everyday household detergents.

How To Use Waterproofing Spray For Coats & Jackets:

  1. Spray the product evenly on the outside of the coat from approximately 15-20 cm away.
  2. Hanging the coat on a washing line when spraying with the proofer will help maintain an even coating.
  3. Check the jacket carefully to ensure no areas of the fabric have been missed.
  4. Wipe off any excess with a clean cloth.
  5. Allow the jacket to dry naturally.

For high abrasion areas such as the elbows and shoulders, it’s recommended that a second coat of proofer is applied. Again, allow to dry naturally.

Wash In Proofer

If you want to wash your coat at the same time as reproofing, we recommend using Wash n Proof.

How To Use Wash N Proof:

  1. For best results, we recommend garments should be reproofed separately.
  2. Use two 50ml capfuls of Wash N Proof per garment and pour directly into the detergent drawer of your washing machine.
  3. Allow the washing machine to run through the complete wash and rinse cycle at 30 degrees or according to care label instructions.
  4. Heat activates the product, so if the coat’s care instructions allow, you can tumble dry it on a low-medium heat or apply heat using an iron or hairdryer.
