Changing Robes Guide: Features, Benefits, and Top UK Locations to Enjoy Them

03.07.2024 | Outdoor Buying Guides

If you love spending time outdoors, whether it’s for wild swimming, rainy walks, or camping adventures, a changing robe can be your best companion. Originally designed for surfers, these robes combine the features of a waterproof jacket, a cosy jumper, and a sleeping bag. Read on to discover everything you need to know about choosing the perfect changing robe and explore some of the best spots to try them out across the UK.

What Is a Changing Robe?

Originally designed to keep surfers dry and warm after a dip in the ocean, a changing robe is fast becoming an essential piece of kit for anyone who loves the great outdoors. A changing robe is basically a mix between a waterproof jacket, a sleeping bag and a warm cosy jumper. They come down to your knees and zip up through the middle making them great to step into and even use for changing your clothes before and after a swim.

How Do You Use a Changing Robe?

The most common use for a changing robe is after a wild or outdoor swim, where you come out of the water and straight into the arms of a warm robe. However, they can also be used for rainy walks, camping or anytime you want some extra comfort!

Can You Wear a Changing Robe as a Coat?

They typically have a loose fit and are made from materials like fleece or microfiber, which can be similar to those used in coats or jackets. However, their primary function is to keep you warm and dry quickly after being in the water, so they may not offer the same level of weather protection or insulation as a traditional coat in colder or wetter conditions.

Do You Need to Dry Off Before Putting Them On?

While you don’t need to be completely dry since the robe will absorb moisture, shaking off excess water and towelling off can improve your comfort and the effectiveness of the robe.

Should You Size Up in Changing Robes?

When choosing a changing robe, it’s generally recommended to select the appropriate size based on your measurements rather than sizing up. A well-fitted robe will be more effective in keeping you warm and comfortable, and if they are too large, it may be less efficient at drying you off quickly. It may also not provide the intended warmth and coverage. If in doubt, you can take a look at our Mountain Warehouse size guide.

Features of a Changing Robe

Different changing robes have different features and deciding the best changing robe for you depends on your end use.

  • Waterproof

Some of our changing robes are waterproof and suitable for light to moderate rain. This means the fabric has a waterproof and breathable membrane which allows perspiration out but stops rain coming in. A waterproof changing robe would be perfect for a rainy walk.

  • Water-resistant

If a changing robe is water-resistant it has been treated with durable water repellent (DWR), which means droplets will bead and roll off the fabric. It is suitable for limited exposure to rain. A water-resistant changing robe is ideal for use before and after a swim or any water sports.

  •  Windproof and Fleece Lining

A thin membrane between the fabric in our changing robes provides protection from the wind and is vital when you’re trying to warm up, especially when paired with a fleece lining.

  • Isotherm

Isotherm means that fibres are densely packed together to retain heat and warmth without adding extra bulk or weight.

*All Mountain Warehouse changing robes also come with convenient front pockets and hood.
